What Are NBN Modem Routers?
The NBN is the National Broadband Network of Australia. It's an national wholesale open access data network project under the auspices of the former Labor government. Typically, NBN customers are given an ADSL or cable modem for their home network, accompanied by a brand-new ADSL switch. So, are NBN routers compatible with TOSL and open source firmware? Under normal circumstances, any modern router should be capable of connecting to the latest version of ADSL or standard CPE Hardware. In fact, most modern routers are capable of doing so, thanks to the standardised networking hardware that is universally supported by the major manufacturers. Any router released after 2021 is also compatible with the HSRP (High Speed Reverse Protocol) modem driver that is present on most other PCs and laptops. This is actually the reason why many companies such as Airman, D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear have made routers designed to specifically support HSRP. When the HSRP driver is installed on a computer, it will ensure that its Ethernet port is correctly translated by the network adapter into the required IP address.
In theory, any router designed to work with the National Broadband Network should support the standardised Ethernet networking hardware. However, in practice, most modern routers and switches are manufactured by either Cisco or Equian, who have produced different brand-specific adapters and software packages. Existing users of these products will need to update their hardware and software, and may find that their existing products cannot connect to the network due to some missing or broken pieces.
This problem can often be solved by contacting the manufacturer of the model computer and asking for an NBN Modem to upgrade the modem. It may be that they will be able to sell you a new one. Alternatively, there is always the option of sourcing one from an online supplier - note that in general you may receive an extremely high price for a modem when buying online. This is due to the increased difficulty in finding a good manufacturer in this day and age. It will usually be best to use a third party supplier than having to deal with the hassle of contacting several different manufacturers.
Once you have your Ethernet network up and running, you will probably find that the NBN modem is not the only piece of hardware that needs to be connected to your local network. If you are using a WAN connection to connect to the internet then a router is essential to protect your network against potential hack attacks. Without one, you risk losing control of your network, or seeing all your data and applications lost forever. If you are going to run a WAN connection without a router then you are recommended to install an internal firewall to provide extra security at the point of sale.
Once you have everything up and running then you will probably want to consider using wireless internet technology to connect to your computer. Many NBN modem routers are now compatible with wireless cards, allowing you to get wireless broadband connection from just one simple piece of hardware. With the right wireless card installed, you should be able to connect to your computer just as you would if you had wired internet running through your home cable. Note that it is essential to have a strong wireless connection otherwise your laptop could crash or freeze during the transfer of information.
One issue that you may run into with a wireless NBN modem is interference. Wireless connections can pick up interference from other wireless devices in the vicinity, sometimes causing a delay in the transfer of information. If the equipment in your room happens to pick up any radio signals, then your computer could experience severe difficulties. This is why it is always a good idea to test your equipment to ensure that no external interference is present before you buy anything.
