One study showed that pregnant women should not take ivermectin due to possible birth defects. In these cases, the daily oral dose is increased progressively in order to achieve the maximum efficacy. The dosage of ivermectin should never be decreased without the written approval of a qualified health care provider. This should also be done in case of any severe or excessive liver disease.
Treatment for onchocerciasis can be successful with the use of ivermectin. However, in certain cases, ivermectin does not work. When this happens, another approach to the treatment of onchocerciasis has to be adopted. The administration of additional medications such as coal tar, coal salts, or pyridoxine may help in the management of this infection. On the other hand, ivermectin cannot be used in combination with these other drugs.
Certain other conditions such as hypokalemia, hyperlipoproteinaemia, eustular lesions, methaemoglobinuria, phototoxic diseases, and acute leucocytosis may also respond favorably to ivermectin in veterinary formulations. These conditions include cystic fibrosis, congenital heart disease, renal failure, liver disease, and hypothyroidism. It should be kept in mind that the administration of ivermectin tablets should only be allowed under the supervision of a veterinarian or physician.
